Thanks, Jake. This is helpful.It was also refreshing to read (in your remarks there) "spirit" and "poem" in the same sentence.

I get frustrated when poets behave as Dr. Frankensteins animating an assortment of scavenged body parts. The "spirit" of the poem is prior, and as old-fashioned as this sounds, I believe it needs embodiment. Isn't the poet one who transcribes that spirit into form?

Forging a poetics commensurate (I almost wrote "commiserate") with the age in which we live is a noble task. I admire the effort expended and the intellectual rigor employed in the process, It is necessary work, but I wonder if we lose the small voice of the poem in all the hammering.
